Japan Emerges as Top Travel Destination for Filipinos

Japan continues to captivate the hearts of tourists with its unique charm and countless attractions, making it a favorite among Filipino travelers. The Land of the Rising Sun has consistently been the top choice for leisure travel among Filipinos, as confirmed by the Green Shoots Radar study conducted by global payment services provider Visa.

Data from January revealed that a staggering 56,800 Filipinos traveled to Japan, almost doubling the number from the previous year. The country’s appeal was further bolstered by the highly anticipated “Eras Tour” concert by global pop icon Taylor Swift, which reportedly generated $228 million in economic impact.

In a bid to enhance tourism cooperation, the Philippines’ Department of Tourism and Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism signed a significant agreement last November. The goal is to boost tourist arrivals by encouraging visits to various attractions, including those in rural areas, providing visitors with an opportunity to experience local customs and culture.

While Japan remains a top choice for Filipino travelers, a Visa study revealed that a significant portion of surveyed individuals are also planning trips to other popular Asian destinations such as South Korea and Singapore. Additionally, business travel to countries like Canada and South Korea is also on the horizon for many Filipinos.

The travel aspirations of Filipinos are further reflected in a study by online travel platform Klook, showing that 76% of respondents intend to travel abroad this year. Preferred activities include sightseeing, shopping, and outdoor adventures, with top attractions like Hong Kong Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland, Universal Studios Japan, and Universal Studios Singapore.

Filipino travelers often seize the opportunity to explore international destinations during long weekends and public holidays, with 73% of respondents booking tickets and accommodations in advance. Budget-wise, foreign trips typically cost between P15,000 to P50,000, with many travelers opting for credit cards and mobile payment options for convenience.

As cross-border travel gains momentum, Visa Philippines Country Manager Jeff Navarro emphasizes the importance of seamless payment experiences for travelers. By leveraging digital platforms and engaging consumers with relevant content, Visa aims to create a secure and convenient payment ecosystem for travelers worldwide.
