The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) issued a yellow alert for the Luzon and Visayas grids on Thursday due to the unavailability of over 40 power plants. A yellow alert is declared when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.

In Luzon, the yellow alert status was in effect from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., with 1,424.3 megawatts unavailable in the region. This was the result of 19 areas experiencing forced outages and one plant running on derated capacity.

Meanwhile, Visayas experienced a yellow alert during various hours of the day, with 670.8 megawatts unavailable in the region. A total of 24 areas were offline, and 12 plants were running on derated capacities.

The grid operator’s announcement highlights the ongoing challenges in power supply management in Luzon and Visayas.
