A recent study by Checkmarx revealed that 92% of companies experienced a breach in the previous year due to vulnerabilities in applications developed in-house. This finding highlights the urgent need for improved application security measures to prevent future breaches.

The responsibility for application security has shifted in recent years, with AppSec managers and developers now sharing duties. According to the study, 49% of respondents stated that their developers were involved in key AppSec solution purchases, indicating a collaborative effort to enhance security practices.

Despite the alarming rate of breaches, a surprising 91% of companies admitted to knowingly releasing vulnerable applications. This underscores the importance of implementing a robust approach to application security to mitigate the risk of cyberattacks.

When asked why they released vulnerable applications, respondents cited business pressure as a significant factor. Developers expressed concerns about security measures slowing down the development process and potentially hindering business success.

To address these challenges, Checkmarx’s NA CISO, Peter Chestna, emphasized the need for a strategic focus on application security and continued investment in emerging technologies. Developers highlighted the importance of integrating developer-friendly AppSec tools seamlessly into their workflows to improve security measures without impeding productivity.

Overall, the study emphasizes the necessity for a comprehensive AppSec platform that addresses the complexities of modern applications and equips all teams involved to effectively secure the entire application footprint from code to cloud.
