A New Report Predicts Ethereum Layer-2 Protocols Could Reach $1 Trillion Market Cap by 2030

A recent research report published on April 3 suggests that Ethereum’s Layer-2 protocols could collectively achieve a market capitalization of $1 trillion by 2030. The analysis was conducted by VanEck, with senior investment analyst Patrick Bush and head of digital research Matthew Sigel leading the study.

VanEck’s forecast highlights the potential of Layer-2 technologies to enhance blockchain scalability and efficiency significantly. This prediction marks a significant shift in the digital asset landscape and the underlying technologies supporting them.

The report delves into various dimensions of the Layer-2 ecosystem, such as transaction pricing, developer and user experience, trust assumptions, and ecosystem size. Specifically, the analysis indicates that technologies like Optimistic Roll-Ups and Zero-Knowledge Roll-Ups are addressing Ethereum’s scalability challenges effectively.

One key development highlighted in the report is the EIP-4844 upgrade, introducing “Blob Space” to reduce data posting costs and improve financial operations for Layer-2 solutions. Additionally, the report explores revenue models for Layer-2 platforms, emphasizing transaction sequencing as a primary income source.

Looking ahead to 2030, VanEck’s study predicts that Layer-2 solutions will capture a significant share of transaction value and Total Value Locked (TVL) within the Ethereum ecosystem. The report also discusses the potential of Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) to boost Layer-2 revenues and suggests that these platforms could offer competitive advantages over Ethereum in specific market segments.

While maintaining a neutral stance on the speculative nature of the crypto market, the report anticipates a future where Layer-2 technologies expand beyond finance to sectors like gaming, social media, and infrastructure. VanEck’s analysis paints a compelling vision of Ethereum Layer-2s evolving into integral components of the global blockchain ecosystem.
