Black Basta gang claims to have hacked the UK water utility Southern Water, a major player in the UK water industry. The group has threatened to leak stolen data on February 29, 2024, including 750 gigabytes of sensitive data, such as personal documents and corporate documents. The gang has also published screenshots as proof of the attack, revealing passports, ID cards, and personal information of some employees. It is currently unknown what ransom the group has demanded from the victim. The Black Basta ransomware group has been active since April 2022 and has accumulated at least $107 million in Bitcoin ransom payments since then. The group has been linked to the Conti Group and has primarily laundered illicit funds through the Russian crypto exchange Garantex. Although SRLabs discovered a weakness in the ransomware’s encryption algorithm and developed tools for potential recovery, Black Bast has reportedly fixed the issue, preventing the decryption technique from being used in newer attacks.
