28-year-old Mef Marzan chooses to spend her weekends traveling to different places for a change of scenery from her busy life as a manager and communications professional. She prefers using credit cards for travel expenses due to the safety and convenience they offer, eliminating the need to search for ATMs to withdraw cash.
The Credit Card Association of the Philippines (CCAP) notes that frequent travelers like Marzan can benefit from the growth of the credit card industry, with various products and programs designed to enhance the travel experience. Executive director Alex Ilagan mentions that travelers can earn points or miles quickly, access airport lounges, and enjoy other perks through these programs.
Marzan uses a travel card with travel-related perks like hotel discounts, as well as a lifestyle card with shopping benefits. Another traveler, Paolo Balderia, was able to use points earned from his credit card for tour packages during a trip to Hong Kong, demonstrating the practicality and flexibility of credit cards for travelers.
However, CCAP advises that not all credit cards are created equal, and consumers should choose cards that align with their spending habits and travel needs. They also caution against cards with complex redemption processes and recommend beginner-friendly cards for first-time travelers.
For international travelers, comparing and choosing cards with low currency conversion fees is essential to avoid unnecessary charges. Despite the potential drawbacks of credit card use, travelers like Balderia see them as a way to maximize their travel experiences and flexibility while on the road.
