Toyota Philippines Confirms Data Leak Compromising Sensitive Customer Information

The Philippine unit of Japanese automotive giant Toyota Motor Corp. has confirmed that a portion of their records has been leaked, compromising sensitive customer data. In an advisory issued on Thursday night, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) stated that the unauthorized disclosure of data was due to unintentional human error related to confidential information on some of the registered users of the MyToyota mobile app.

TMP President Masando Hashimoto assured the public that the integrity and availability of the data remain intact, emphasizing that any data regarding financial transactions was not part of the disclosure. Affected customers have also been immediately informed about the incident, and Hashimoto apologized for the breach.

The company is cooperating with the appropriate government authorities and will continue to update affected customers on the progress of the probe. Customers who are concerned about the data leak can contact Toyota’s customer assistance center through the number (02) 819-2912 or the email address [email protected]. TMP’s data protection officer can also be reached through [email protected]

Earlier, the National Privacy Commission (NPC) confirmed that TMP had notified them of the breach on May 14. While the extent of the breach was not disclosed, an online group dedicated to publishing data leaks, Deep Web Konek, reported that the Toyota data leak exposed over a terabyte of data spanning from 2016 to 2024. This information included sensitive customer details such as full names, addresses, bank documents, valid IDs, email addresses, and photographs of sensitive documents.

The NPC also mentioned that Robinsons Land Corp. was affected by the data breach. Concerns about privacy and data security have been raised following this incident, prompting Toyota customers to remain vigilant and cautious.
