Barbershop pioneers safe space for LGBTQ+ community

Barbierro, a barbershop located in Biñan, Laguna, is grabbing attention with its colorful facade and unique business concept. It proudly stands as the Philippines’ first loud and proud queer barbershop.

Founded by partners Paul Sumayao and Jedi Directo, Barbierro’s inspiration came from their negative experiences in traditional barbershops, where they felt uncomfortable due to their queer identities. Sumayao, also a member of the Philippine LGBT Chamber of Commerce, wanted to create a safe and inclusive space for everyone.

The barbershop’s interior design deviates from the typical macho aesthetics, opting for vibrant colors and queer artwork on the walls. This welcoming environment has attracted a diverse clientele, including families and individuals who appreciate the shop’s comfortable and safe atmosphere.

Despite being the first of its kind in the area, Barbierro has been well-received in Biñan, prompting Sumayao and Directo to expand their business. With a second branch in Laong Laan, Manila, they aim to open more locations in Quezon City and Bicol.

In addition to providing quality grooming services, Barbierro aims to amplify the conversation on LGBTQ+ business contributions to the economy. Through their franchise model, they hope to empower more queer-owned businesses in the Philippines.

Sumayao emphasizes the importance of upholding queer values within the brand and among their staff. Their barbers, integral allies in challenging industry norms, have undergone training on sexual orientation and gender identity, fostering a more inclusive environment for all customers.

Ultimately, Barbierro stands as a beacon of progress and acceptance, paving the way for a more diverse and inclusive business landscape in the Philippines.
