Elon Musk Drops Lawsuit Against OpenAI
On June 11, a court filing revealed that Elon Musk has dropped his lawsuit against OpenAI. Musk, the plaintiff in the case, submitted a notice of entry of dismissal and proof of service. The lawsuit has been dismissed without prejudice, giving Musk the option to refile it in the future.
According to CNBC, the Superior Court of California of the County of San Francisco was set to hold a hearing on June 12 regarding OpenAI and associated defendants’ request to dismiss the lawsuit. However, Musk dropped the case before the hearing took place.
The lawsuit, filed by Musk on February 29, included allegations of breach of contract and unfair competition against OpenAI, its co-founder and CEO, Sam Altman, and other company members. Musk claimed that OpenAI had shifted its focus from developing AI for the benefit of humanity to developing it for profit, adopted a closed-source model, and essentially become a subsidiary of its funding source and partner, Microsoft.
Although Musk had helped establish OpenAI and served on the board until 2018, he now leads a competing firm called xAI, which emphasizes pro-humanity goals. xAI recently secured $6 billion in funding, leading to a valuation of $24 billion.
