Maxicare Healthcare Corp. has officially confirmed a security breach that exposed the personal information of around 13,000 members, which is less than 1 percent of its total membership base. The breach was related to the unauthorized access to personal information of members who used the booking platform of their third-party homecare provider, Lab@Home.
Fortunately, Maxicare stated that no sensitive medical information was exposed in the breach. The company reassured its members that their business operations, network, and customer data have not been impacted in any way. Emergency measures have been put in place to ensure the privacy and safety of affected members.
Maxicare has launched an investigation with data security professionals and a cybersecurity firm to address the breach. They are also fully complying with regulatory requirements set by the National Privacy Commission.
Meanwhile, a consumer rights group expressed concern over the recent data breaches involving big private companies like Maxicare, Toyota Motor Philippines, and Robinson’s Land. The group emphasized the importance of consumer data protection and called for swift action from relevant authorities to apprehend the perpetrators behind these breaches.
The group has also urged the National Privacy Commission and the Department of Information and Communication Technology to enhance data protection mechanisms to safeguard consumers’ data against such breaches.
