A surge in malicious cyber activity targeting the upcoming elections in India has been identified by cybersecurity firm Resecurity, who warn of the involvement of multiple independent hacktivist groups. With India’s general elections scheduled between April 19 and June 1, 2024, the country’s vast population and economic significance have made it a prime target for cyberattacks. The hacktivist groups are conducting influence campaigns designed to manipulate public opinion, undermine trust in the democratic process, and target government leaders. Information such as voter ID cards and other personally identifiable data has been leaked online, with the intention of spreading false information and profiting from selling stolen information on the dark web. Resecurity has alerted law enforcement and federal authorities to the leaked data and urged Indian citizens to be cautious of information from unreliable sources that could affect their votes. Multiple independent hacktivist groups, including Anon Black Flag Indonesia and Anonymous Bangladesh, are behind the cyber activity aimed at influencing the Indian elections.
