The city of Beckley, West Virginia confirmed a cyberattack on its computer network in a notice posted on social media. City officials are working to investigate the source and scope of the incident and have apologized for any inconvenience caused. The attack comes in the wake of numerous incidents targeting small governments across the United States in 2023. Beckley Mayor Rob Rappold confirmed the cyberattack and stated that there is no timeline for when systems will be restored. Meanwhile, the Ohio city of Huber Heights is still dealing with the fallout of a ransomware attack it suffered in November. City Manager Rick Dzik expressed concerns about the data compromised in the attack. The city council has allocated funds for response and recovery efforts. The incident follows a trend of cyberattacks on government entities in 2023, including headline-grabbing incidents in Oakland and Dallas.
